Cutting down your tree in The Hague
A tree in the garden is a wonderful addition to your home. It provides shade, oxygen and cooling. But a tree also has its disadvantages. For example, it takes a lot of time to maintain the garden around the tree. You have to rake leaves regularly, and sometimes a tree can promote moss growth. Leaves can also end up on your roof or in the gutter, so these parts of your home need more attention.
Certified tree barbers
If you want to get rid of this extra work, you can have your tree cut down. However, this is not without risk. A tree is large and heavy and can cause a lot of damage in the event of an accident. That’s why it’s important to hire an experienced arborist. At tree care specialist, we work with certified specialists who come to you in The Hague.
Stump removal
Cutting down a tree is not always enough. After felling, a stump often remains in the ground. This stump can form a hazard, for example to pedestrians or cyclists. Our specialists from The Hague remove this stump in a professional manner, with or without the help of machines.
Tree clearing
Pruning trees is an important part of garden maintenance. By pruning regularly, you can keep the tree healthy and beautiful. There are different ways to prune trees, depending on the purpose of pruning. You can read more about the different cutting methods here.

Tree felling permit The Hague
If you plan to prune, move or cut down a tree in The Hague, it is essential to be aware of the need for an environmental permit. This applies to a wide range of trees, including common trees, conifers, holly, or even large shrubs (bushes). Here you will find everything you need to know about the process of applying for a felling permit in The Hague.
Who can apply for a permit?
You, as the owner of the tree, can apply for a felling permit. If someone else wants to submit the application, you need written permission from you.
When do you need a permit in the municipality of The Hague?
You need a permit if you:
- Want to cut down a tree.
- Want to prune between 30% and 50% of the tree crown.
- Want to remove more than 50% of the tree crown (for candelabation or pollarding), requiring a permit only the first time.
- Want to transplant a tree with a trunk circumference of 30 centimeters or more.
Whether you need a permit depends on where the tree is located, such as the size of your backyard.
How do you measure trunk circumference?
Measure the trunk circumference at a height of 130 centimeters. For trees with multiple trunks, measure the thickest trunk. For the application, you must provide the trunk diameter, which you calculate by dividing the trunk circumference by π (3.14).
Exceptions you don’t need a permit for
You do not need a permit if:
- You want to cut down an elm that is infected with Dutch elm disease.
- You are performing work in a protected forest or natural area under the Nature Protection Act.
What do you need for your application?
For your application, you need:
- At least 3 different digital photos of the tree.
- A situation sketch.
- The trunk diameter of the tree.
How do you apply for a permit in The Hague?
First do a permit check in the Environment Counter. Here you can also apply directly for your environmental permit. The municipality will assess your application and may sometimes ask for advice outside its own organization.
