Tree felling

Uprooting a tree means removing the entire tree – often including the roots – from your yard. This is heavy and potentially dangerous work that is better left to professionals. On this page you can read how Boomzorgspecialist works with the safe felling of trees, what the points of attention are and what you should take into account in The Hague region.

Do you want to fell one or more trees? Specialist Gert-Jan will visit you for an estimate of the costs.

How is a tree uprooted?

Tree grubbing involves more than just cutting. Our tree experts begin with a thorough inspection of the tree and surrounding area. We assess height, stability and any nearby obstacles (such as fences, roofs or power lines). We then determine the safest method of removing the tree. In a wide clearing we can cut down the tree in one go, but in a city garden in The Hague we will usually break the tree off branch by branch and piece by piece. We do this while climbing into the tree using climbing equipment, or with an aerial platform when clearing a large tree.

Safety always comes first. We provide a controlled direction of fall or carefully hoist down heavy branches with ropes. This way we prevent damage to your property and surrounding plantings. After the trunk is cut down, we can optionally mill away the remaining stump. Often, without milling, a stump remains after felling – we are happy to remove that stump for you (see also our service stump removal). Finally, we neatly dispose of all wood waste and branches, leaving your garden clean.

Cost tree clearing

A frequently asked question is: what does it cost to dig up a tree? Tree grubbing costs depend on several factors. Every tree and situation is different, especially in a diverse environment like The Hague and its surroundings. Some important factors that determine the price are:

  • Size of the tree: The taller and thicker the tree, the more work (and specialized equipment) is needed. For example, removing a small ornamental tree is cheaper than uprooting a huge oak tree.
  • Accessibility: Is the tree in a narrow backyard downtown or quite open in The Hague? Difficult-to-reach locations may require additional equipment, such as a crane or boom lift.
  • Safety and precaution: Trees close to houses, barns or cables require extra time for controlled cutting. This safety work affects costs.
  • Disposal of wood and waste: We shred branches and cut the trunk into manageable pieces. Processing and disposing of all this material also involves costs.
  • Additional services: Would you like to have the roots grubbed along with the tree or have the stump milled directly? These additional work may increase the price slightly, but provide a complete result.

Because every situation is unique, we work with custom quotes. Our specialist can visit you in The Hague for a no-obligation inspection and advice. This will give you a clear picture of the costs of uprooting the tree before we start work. At Tree Care Specialist, we love transparency: you will always receive a clear quote in advance, so there are no surprises.

Grub your own tree or outsource?

Maybe you’re considering taking up the saw yourself. Felling a tree yourself, is that a good idea? In practice, felling and removing a tree without professional help is not recommended, especially for larger specimens. First, there is the safety issue: without experience and proper equipment, you run the risk of serious accident or damage. A tree can fall or roll unexpectedly; one wrong cut and the situation can become life-threatening. Professionals use specialized techniques and tools to manage this.

Second, practically speaking, it’s a huge job. Where do you leave the wood and branches? Do you have a professional chainsaw, climbing equipment or a wood chipper at your disposal? Probably not. In addition, as an individual, you’re usually not insured if something goes wrong when you do the grubbing yourself. Our certified arborists have the knowledge, experience and machines to do the job quickly and safely. By outsourcing tree care, you save yourself a lot of trouble and risk. You can comfortably watch as we expertly dismantle and remove the tree. Afterwards, you can enjoy a tidy garden without any worries.

Do you need a logging permit?

Cutting down a tree is not allowed just like that; often a felling permit is required from the municipality. Each municipality has its own rules. In The Hague, for example, most trees require a permit, especially if the trunk has a certain thickness. Felling a tree without a permit can lead to high fines and mandatory replanting. We therefore recommend always checking first whether your tree requires a permit.

In many cases, a felling permit is required if the tree has a trunk diameter above a certain limit (for example, more than ~30 cm diameter at a height of 1.3 meters, in The Hague). The tree species or location may also play a role; monumental trees or trees in a protected cityscape cannot be cut down without permission. Tree felling without a permit is illegal, so take this seriously. In doubt? Tree Care Specialist has a lot of experience with permit applications in The Hague and surrounding municipalities such as Westland (which includes Monster). We can advise you whether a permit is needed and, if so desired, assist you with the application.

Frequently asked questions about tree felling

What does it cost to cut down a tree?

The cost of uprooting a tree depends on size, accessibility and other factors. On average, you can expect to pay a few hundred euros for a medium-sized tree. If the tree is very large or difficult to uproot (e.g. close to buildings in The Hague), it can cost more because of extra equipment. We are happy to visit you for a customized quote, so you know exactly where you stand.

Do I need a felling permit to cut down a tree?

In many cases, you do indeed need a felling permit before you can cut down a tree. Municipalities such as The Hague require such a permit for trees above a certain trunk diameter (usually around 30 cm or larger). Always check your municipality’s rules. Tree Care Specialist can advise you; we know the local regulations and will help you on your way with the application if necessary.

Can I harvest a tree myself?

Cutting down a tree yourself may seem appealing to save costs, but it is usually not a good idea. Without proper knowledge and equipment, it is dangerous work. You can injure yourself or others and cause damage to your home or that of your neighbors. In addition, disposing of a downed tree is very intensive. It is safer and more efficient to hire a professional who knows exactly what he is doing.

Can I cut down a tree myself or should I hire a professional to do so?

In some cases you can cut down a tree yourself, for example if it is a small tree on your own property and no permit is needed. Yet in practice it is often wiser to hire a professional. Trees can fall unpredictably, and without the proper knowledge or resources you risk damage or injury. We ensure safe and neat execution, with the right equipment and insurance.

Do you also remove the tree stump when clearing?

By default, we leave the stump in place after we cut down the tree, unless you indicate that you want it gone. The felling (uprooting) itself basically involves cutting down and removing the tree. Removing the stump is a separate job that we are happy to perform for you with a special milling machine. When you enquire whether you also want the stump milled away, we can arrange this in one go, so that your garden is completely free of debris.
