You may need a permit to prune trees in The Hague. You need permission from the municipality when you:
- You want to remove (prune) between 30% and 50% of the upper branches of the tree.
- You want to remove more than 50% of the upper branches (candelabrumming or pollarding). You only need permission for this the first time.
- You want to move a tree with a thick trunk starting at 30 centimeters.
So do I always need a permit?
In the above cases, you don’t always need a permit. You need a permit:
- If your backyard is smaller than 50 square meters:
- Can you see the tree from the public road? Then you need permission if the trunk circumference is 30 centimeters or thicker.
- Can’t see the tree from the public road? Then you need permission if the trunk circumference is 90 centimeters or thicker.
- If your backyard is larger than 50 square meters:
- Always need permission if the trunk circumference is 30 centimeters or thicker.
- In all other cases, you need permission if the trunk circumference is 30 centimeters or thicker.
