Tree pollarding is a common pruning method in which all branches are removed up to the trunk or main branches. It is used primarily on species such as willows, poplars and ash trees, which grow quickly and require regular maintenance. Pollarding keeps trees healthy, safe and in a recognizable shape.

Tree pollarding permit
In some cases, you need a permit to pollard trees. This depends on your municipality’s rules. You need permission when you:
- Want to remove more than 50% of the tree’s upper branches (pollarding or candelabrumming).
- Want to pollard a monumental tree or protected tree species.
- Want to move a tree with a trunk diameter of 30 centimeters or more.
Do I always need a permit?
A permit is not required in all cases. Municipalities often make exceptions, such as:
- Certain tree species that are not protected.
- Young trees with a trunk circumference less than 30 centimeters (measured at 1.30 meters in height).
- Trees on private property that are not visible from public roads unless they are protected.
Note that rules vary by municipality. We will check locally to see if you need a permit and advise on the right approach.

The best time to pollard trees is between November and March, when the tree is dormant. This prevents growth damage and allows the tree to sprout healthily again in the spring.

Willows, ash trees and poplars in particular are regularly pollarded. These species sprout quickly after pollarding, maintaining their shape and health.
